Courtyard Bungalow
Ottawa, Ontario
The hipped roof forms of this bungalow allow it to meld easily and elegantly into its 1950s Alta Vista neighbourhood. The deep lot and sloping grade allowed a large footprint with a walkout basement which avoided the jarring height and mass that some infill projects bring with them.
Providing an interior courtyard effectively brings south and east light into the home while creating an oasis away from the busy street traffic.
The living spaces wrap around the courtyard on three sides allowing light and interconnecting views throughout. Large areas of glazing help integrate the interior and exterior living spaces. The 10 ft. ceiling is also vaulted in key areas to bring additional height and drama. The kitchen is centered around a large island and is served by a generous walk-in storage pantry. Calcutta marble with highlights of glass mosaic line the walls of the spacious master ensuite with free-standing tub.
The exterior of this custom home is clad in French limestone and fibre cement board. The interior materials include limestone tiles, grey stained maple flooring and walnut cabinetry with off-white accents.
